Atomia vs Media Temple (gs)
Just like with Rackspace, we really do admire Media Temple and what they have accomplished. We want our clients to be able to offer similar solutions to them and other leading providers. This is what Media Temple says about their Grid-Service and how it compares to the Atomia platform.
| Atomia - Media Temple (gs) | |
|---|---|
| Handling traffic bursts | |
AtomiaAtomia automatically spreads the traffic among all nodes in all available web server clusters to easily handle sudden traffic spikes to individual websites without it causing disturbances to other customer websites. Not only that, depending on your preferences and the type of service the customer has purchased, you can either put a cap on resources, use all nodes available to you, or even deploy new nodes automatically to handle traffic peaks. |
Media Temple (gs)Unlike traditional shared hosting, the Media Temple Grid-Service easily handles traffic bursts with loads of servers serving your site. |
| One-click installer | |
AtomiaAtomia Control Panel includes a true one-click web installer that allows customers to easily install, remove or update popular third-party applications such as WordPress, Joomla, osCommerce, MediaWiki and Umbraco. |
Media Temple (gs)Easily install WordPress, Drupal and ZenCart with the included one-click installer. |
| MySQL scalability | |
Atomia (Currently not supported)The Atomia platform can automatically scale web servers based on real-time CPU, disk I/O and memory usage on a customer account basis. At the time of writing, this functionality is not available for database servers, but we are working on it. However, thanks to the modular structure of the platform, you always have the possibility to add such functionality yourself. |

| Multiple FTP and email addresses | |
AtomiaAtomia supports both e-mail addresses and multiple FTP users and access levels for each account. Also, users can select different hosting platforms (Apache, IIS or Litespeed) for whole or parts of their websites - whatever suits their needs. |
Media Temple (gs)The platform supports sub-FTP users and unique e-mail addresses for every domain name. |
| Server redundancy | |
Atomia (Partly supported)All web server types and e-mail servers are set up in clusters, where each node can manage each website or e-mail account simultaneously, to maximize performance, redundancy, reliability and throughput. At the time of writing, this is not supported for database servers, but we are working on it. Currently, database servers are standalone nodes, and databases cannot be automatically moved or shared between nodes. However, since all web servers are behind a web accelerator, pages are cached to minimize the number of disk reads and database accesses, which in turn drastically increases general website performance and reduces the load on the database servers. |
Media Temple (gs)All specific tasks such as web services, e-mail, databases, etc., have their own dedicated pool of clusters. Since all tasks are handled by multiple servers, redundancy is built in, and resources are always available. |
| MySQL Containers | |
AtomiaAtomia allows you to manually or automatically deploy new server instances. This allows you to configure performance-tuned environments with a fixed set of allocated resources that your customers can purchase. Unlike the MySQL GridContainer, this functionality is not limited to MySQL servers, so it can be used for any type of server you would like to deploy on behalf of your customers. |
Media Temple (gs)Isolated MySQL GridContainers are performance-tuned environment add-ons designed specifically for database-heavy applications. |
| Usage-based hosting plans | |
AtomiaAtomia includes what we call a virtualization controller. This system measures CPU usage, disk I/O and memory usage in real time for every customer account. The massive amount of information processed by this system is presented to end users and system administrators through the platform control panels. This system is the basis for our compute cycle and auto-scaling functionality, which lets you offer your clients the possibility to purchase pay-as-you-go computing power or reserve capacity for traffic peaks. |
Media Temple (gs)The Media Temple Grid-Service platform measures the resources used by every request to your service. It includes enough resources for most sites, but if you exceed this limitation, you can get additional pay-as-you-go resources when you need them. Also, the reporting functionality in this system allows you to track down errors and code inefficiencies. |
| Webmail versatility | |
AtomiaThe Atomia platform does not limit what webmail applications you can offer your clients. Also, Atomia Control Panel includes everything end users need to activate e-mail for your domain(s), set up e-mail accounts, configure auto-replies or setting up mailing lists. |
Media Temple (gs)Select the webmail system you like the most. Included are RoundCube, @Mail and SquirrelMail. Manage passwords and spam settings directly from our control panel. |
| LAMP versatility | |
Atomia (Partly supported)The Atomia platform allows you the possibility to offer a full set of LAMP-based technologies including popular scripting languages such as PHP, Perl, Ruby, Python, node.js and databases such as MySQL. At the time of writing, the Atomia Control Panel does not offer you to configure PostgreSQL databases out of the box, even though we are working on it. Adding configuration support yourself is however a simple matter with the SDKs and APIs provided in the platform. |
Media Temple (gs)The platform supports the latest versions of all major LAMP-based technologies such as PHP, Perl, Ruby, Python, MySQL and PostgreSQL. |
| Control Panel for iPhone | |
AtomiaEnd users (customers) can manage all aspects of a their accounts via the Atomia Control Panel. At the time of writing, the platform does not include an iPhone or Android version of the control panel. That said, the modular structure of the control panel allows you to easily add custom functionality specific to your organization. Also, the APIs exposed by the platform make it possible for you to develop a mobile version of the control panel if you so wish - our developer documentation even includes a set of iPhone integration examples. |
Media Temple (gs)The AccountCenter control panel allows you to control your account, and is available both online and as an iPhone app. |
